By early 1987…
“By early 1987, I had decided that using Ascending Colors and metaphoric forms in the Illustrative paintings, was in essence, getting ahead of myself. I was no where near being satisfied with my use of Ascending Colors as the sole source of imagery. I felt an urgency to finish the investigation, to focus on using Ascending Colors as a language and achieve a true fluency with it. These paintings are the final part of that journey. With the Dec. 1988 work ”Rising Together”, I felt that I was finally satisfied. My language was complete and I was ready to take a break. I intended to take about 3 years off to reflect, review, plan and stabilize. The last few, smaller canvases were little more than cleanup. And one very special love letter.” MJS
